The Neighborhood

From Civil War Encampment
to DC's Most Coveted Circle

Logan Circle is named for Civil War General John A. Logan, whose equestrian statue has anchored the center of the traffic circle since 1901. Originally known as Iowa Circle, the neighborhood was developed in the 1870s as a residential enclave for Washington's growing upper class. Grand Victorian mansions and ornate rowhouses sprang up around the circle and along the state-named avenues that radiate from it.

After decades of decline following the 1968 riots, Logan Circle has undergone one of the most dramatic revitalizations in DC history. The opening of a Whole Foods two blocks from the circle in 2000 is widely cited as a turning point, and the 14th Street corridor has since transformed into one of the city's premier dining and nightlife destinations. Today, Logan Circle is one of DC's most expensive and sought-after neighborhoods — and the only major downtown traffic circle that remains entirely residential.

The Logan Circle Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, contains 135 late-19th-century residences. The larger Fourteenth Street Historic District, added in 1994, encompasses approximately 765 contributing properties tracing the development of one of Washington's earliest streetcar lines.

Dining & Nightlife

The 14th Street Corridor Is the Main Event

The blocks between M and U Streets along 14th Street NW form one of DC's densest concentrations of restaurants, bars, and independent shops. Le Diplomate — Stephen Starr's beloved French brasserie — has been a neighborhood anchor since 2013 and remains one of the toughest reservations in the city. Compass Rose serves international street food. Doi Moi brings Southeast Asian flavors. Chicken + Whiskey pairs rotisserie chicken with a hidden whiskey bar behind a refrigerator door.

ChurchKey offers one of the most respected craft beer programs in the Mid-Atlantic. Pearl Dive Oyster Palace, Barcelona Wine Bar, Estadio, and dozens more fill the surrounding blocks. For groceries, residents walk to Whole Foods on P Street or Trader Joe's nearby.

Architecture & Character

DC's Last Residential Traffic Circle

Logan Circle is defined by its Victorian and Richardsonian Romanesque rowhouses — turrets, towers, bay windows, and ornate brick facades lining tree-shaded streets. The circle itself, recently renovated by the National Park Service, functions as a neighborhood gathering space with a fountain and green lawns.

Beyond the historic core, modern loft-style condominiums have risen along the 14th Street and P Street corridors, and many of the grand old rowhouses have been converted into beautifully renovated multi-unit residences. The Studio Theatre, operating since 1978 with four performance spaces, anchors a healthy arts scene that includes galleries scattered along the commercial strip.
